Adopt-A-Highway

Rhode Island TU maintains a clean roadside on a two-mile stretch of Rte. 165 in Exeter, RI where it crosses Wood River just below the confluence of the Falls and Flat Rivers. Chapter volunteers organize four times between April - October to pick up trash along the roadside in small groups. The Chapter provides the necessary supplies for the cleanup, including safety vests, gloves, bags and tools to pick up trash. The large bags full of trash are left at the Check Station where they are picked up and properly disposed of by the Village of Hope Valley, RI.

Adopt-A-Highway outings are a great way to meet fellow chapter members. After the roadside trash is picked up, volunteers meet back at the Check Station for lunch provided by Lawson Cary, III. Lawson’s lunches are delicious, but his homemade chicken soup is legendary. It has been a staple on the A-A-H lunch menu since Lawson Cary, Jr. brought his wife’s homemade chicken soup for the volunteers’ lunch for several years.
